1. Program introduction & requirements.  [Note on the Interchange Workbook : use this by yourself to practice your weak points in English].
 
 
2. Timed speaking (3 minutes) => self-introduction to a  partner. Monologue.

3. Writing exercise : Write a short, imaginary biography of someone else using the key words in 2. [Later, change with a partner for peer correction. Especially underline and check the verbs for past tense]
 
4. Speaking exerciseInterchange 2, page 2 : practice the conversation, but change to locations and activities to some place in China.
 
5. Speaking exercise : Friend⁄partner selection on the Internet :
 
a) Look at IC page 1 #1 -> "getting to know you" advertisement; 
 
b) Student 1 : "Advertising for a friend⁄partner" on the Internet is a good way to find a partner". Agree or disagree and give reasons. Speak for 3 minutes.
 
c) Student 2 : "Advertising for a friend⁄partner" on the Internet could be quite dangerous in China". Agree or disagree and give reasons. Speak for 3 minutes.
 
6. Writing exercise : Imagine you are now 29 years old. Your parents are worried because you are not married yet. They want to get a matchmaker, but you don't want that. Instead you agree to advertise on the Internet for a life partner.

7. HOMEWORK (due next week) . The teacher will check and collect these assignments each week. They make up 20% of your final grade.

Imagine that you are allowed to put an MP3 recording of yourself on an Internet dating site.

Make a short recording in English introducing yourself to possible boyfriends or girlfriends so they will want to contact you. Try to sound really natural and attractive.

[If you use a phone or MP3 recorder, copy the recording to the classroom computer. Use the "Homework" subdirectory. Make in a folder with your class number on it. Put the recording inside that. Here is an example of a file name : 01-08s.mp3. This example means "MP3 assignment 1 by student number 8" (your class-member number).

Student 1 (3 minutes) : "Some of the problems that poor people have when they move from Henan to Guangzhou for work are ... "
 
Student 2 (3 minutes) : "Some practical ways to help millions of people who are moving to the cities in China are ...... "
 
10. Listening exercise : Interchange p.8 #4 Life as an immigrant : Listen to the CD recording. Note down some key words.
 
11. Performance exercise: With a partner, act out the CD recording conversation from memory. Note the key words you wrote down. It doesn't matter if you change the converstion a bit.
 
12 Vocabulary exercise[ The teacher will check your vocabulary books regularly ! ]
 
a) In your vocabulary exercise book write down 10 Chinese words (in hanzi) that you would like to know the English meaning for. The words do not have to come from your English class.
 
b) Find and write down the English meaning.
 
c) On the second page of your vocabulary book, write down a sentence in English to show the meaning of each new word. (If the sentence is funny, or exciting, or crazy, or beautiful, then you will remember the new word more easily).
 
13. Interpreting exercise :
 
a) Student 1: Tell a little story in Chinese about the last time you visited a doctor.
 
b) Student 2 : Re-tell the first student's story in English. [Grammar note: this story happened in the PAST. Be careful with the English verbs].
 
c) Change roles.
 
14. Writing & translation exercise
 
Translate your own Chinese story from [13] into English.
